My dictionary defines a test as ‘a procedure intended to establish the quality, performance, or reliability of something, especially before it is taken into widespread use’ or ‘a means of determining the presence, quality, or truth of something’.
I feel like I was put to that kind of test today.
My plans for the day (including the post I was going to write) fell apart when I got a call that my dad had fallen in his day centre and been taken to hospital. I spent the afternoon and early evening with him at A&E and then on the ward he was admitted to. Over and over I reminded him why he was there (he has dementia), reassured him that it wasn’t his fault, explained his condition to the nursing staff, and generally tried to make sure he got all the care he needed. I’ll be back again tomorrow, doing the same thing.
But did I pass the test? What quality, reliability, and truth was demonstrated in me?
I know I wasn’t perfect. But God has been working on growing patience, kindness, and endurance in me so here was another chance to prove them. I hope I didn’t let Him down.

Thank you, June. I think it’s just par for the course when caring for an elderly parent really. We went though similar for my mum 3 years ago. But I guess God still has much to teach me and that’s why He keeps giving my opportunities to practise.

Thanks for the encouragement and the prayers, Andrew. I was blessed in the examples of caring both my parents gave me. I only have my Dad on this side of heaven and he’s very precious.
